Overview

At a glance

Athens_Wave is a transformative initiative dedicated to consolidating and advancing a series of energy efficiency investments in and around the city of Athens, with a strong focus on retrofitting and upgrading the stock of municipal buildings and schools. The project sets forth to provide Project Development Assistance (PDA) to support the maturity of the aforementioned investments, enabling them to attract private financing and facilitating investment delivery through Energy Performance Contracting. The primary objective is to eliminate administrative and market barriers, thereby paving the way for substantial improvements in energy efficiency and sustainability.

Key Objectives

Maturity Acceleration: Athens_Wave aims to fast-track energy efficiency projects to achieve critical mass for private financing and Energy Performance Contracting.

Replicability: The initiative seeks to serve as a model for other municipal, regional, and central government entities at both national and EU levels, encouraging the bundling of public infrastructure for energy retrofit through energy performance contracts.

Sustainability: All initiatives under Athens_Wave contribute significantly to energy efficiency, sustainability, and the reduction of energy consumption and emissions, aligning with local, national, and European targets. Additionally, it aids in reducing air pollution in Athens.

Improved Comfort and Health: The initiative places a strong emphasis on enhancing indoor comfort and health conditions for building occupants and visitors.

Project Impact

The Athens_Wave project is set to optimize energy efficiency in the city of Athens, particularly through the retrofitting of two bundles of public buildings using Energy Performance Contracts (EPCs). The project's overarching goal extends beyond energy savings; it's about mobilizing private and public resources to maximize the environmental and societal benefits through a blended financing scheme.
Social Impact
The Athens_Wave project goes beyond energy savings to create significant social impacts:

Capacity Building: Empowering 325 individuals, including Anaplassis' personnel, municipal officers, and teaching staff.

Environmental Awareness: Raising awareness among 6,210 people, including 2,070 students and 4,140 family members.

Employment Generation: Creating 33 full-time equivalent jobs.

Future Prospects

Besides the direct impact of the initial interventions, Athens_Wave envisions a potential expansion to all 31 additional school buildings owned by Anaplassis S.A. The expected impact over the five years beyond the project's conclusion includes the future impacts through continued energy efficiency improvements, contributing to further energy savings and emission reductions.

Public Actors with Enhanced Capacity: Benefiting 775 individuals.

Environmental Awareness: Spreading awareness to 21,390 people, including 7,130 students and 14,260 family members.

Employment Generation: An additional 86 full-time equivalent jobs, reinforcing the local economy and providing opportunities for the community.

The Athens_Wave project is a catalyst for change, promoting energy efficiency, sustainability, and social well-being. It not only transforms the energy landscape of Athens but also sets an inspiring example for future initiatives, laying the foundation for a cleaner, more sustainable future for our city.
